A journey through the flavors of Umbria: white truffles and saffron of Cascia.

 

Every year, during the feast of All Saints, in the historical centre of Gubbio and Città di Castello, two of Umbria’s most beautiful mediaeval towns, the National Fairs of White truffles are a chance to discover the delicacies and typical products of the Umbria Region. All types of cheese, mushrooms, meats and cured meats, olive oil straight from the press, honey, bread, wines and liquors, and, the main feature: the white truffle. The annual fairs are an important opportunity also admire the craftsmanship of the districts.

In the same days the village of Cascia, in Valnerina, helds the Pure Saffron Market-Exhibition.  The pure saffron of Cascia, is a product of ancient tradition used and known for its precious qualities.

Day by Day Itinerary of the Tour

 

  • Thursday 27th October– Arrive in Perugia
    Arrival at the country farm “La volpe e l’uva” (Perugia, Central Italy, Umbria, near Tuscany). Check-in your apartment at 4:00pm.

 

  • Friday 28th October– Cooking + Exhibition of White truffle in Gubbio
    Morning. Hands-on cooking lesson starts around 10.00 am. You will prepare a four course lunch. For lunch you will eat your creations in your apartment accompanied by our wines.
    Afternoon. Gubbio is a well-preserved medieval hill town in the Umbria region of central Italy. Gubbio’s historic center has a good selection of medieval, Gothic, and Renaissance monuments built of gray limestone and has great views over the beautiful countryside. Just outside the town is a Roman amphitheatre. You will visit the city with a professional guide and you will visit the White truffle exhibition held in one of the most important square of Gubbio: a fair of taste, marked by quality but above all tradition, history and genuine flavour.

 

  • Saturday 291th October– Cooking + Exhibition of Saffron of Cascia
    Morning. Hands-on cooking lesson starts around 10.00 am. You will prepare a four course lunch. For lunch you will eat your creations in your apartment accompanied by our wines.
    Afternoon. Cascia is a village situated in Umbria, in the Valnerina valley. In the Roman period it was called “Cursula” and it was destroyed during the I century before Christ by the Barbarians and by the earthquakes that have always characterized that area. The Cascia’s Pure Saffron Market-Exhibition, known throughout the region and in Italy, fills the square of Cascia with gastronomic stands.

 

  • Sunday 30th October – Cooking + White truffle fair and “Burri Collection”in Città di Castello
    Morning. Hands-on cooking lesson starts around 10.00 am. You will prepare a four course lunch. For lunch you will eat your creations in your apartment accompanied by our wines.
    Afternoon. Your guide will accompany you to visit the Fondazione Palazzo Albizzini “Collezione Burri” in the prestigious town house that then gave the foundation its name. The works of the master are displayed in two exhibition spaces, the Palazzo Albizzini and the Ex Seccatoi del Tabacco. The collection in Palazzo Albizzini was opened in 1981. There are 130 works displayed in chronological order from 1948 to 1989 covering twenty rooms. We can see the tars and the moulds and a selection of sacks that date from the 50’s. In other rooms we find the woods, irons and plastics and finally the large Cellotexes. The tour includes also the guided visit of the Città di Castello town that held the White truffle exhibition.

 

  • Monday 31th October : Departure.

  • 3 cooking classes of approximately 4 hours,

No cooking guests. It is also possible to bring along a non-participating partner who can spend the morning enjoying the surroundings, and could then join the group at lunchtime.
