Easter in Umbria
4 days cooking classes and Tours to see Easter traditions and celebrations in Italy from 5th April to 9th April 2012
Umbria is known as the land of Saints and Easter represents one of the best periods to live this joyful and religious atmosphere.
Like all holidays in Italy, Easter, Pasqua has its share of rituals and traditions. In Umbria Solemn religious processions are held in many towns on the Friday before Easter. Many churches have special statues of the Virgin and Jesus that play a big part in the processions. The statues may be paraded through the city or displayed in the main square. Parade participants are often dressed in traditional ancient costumes.
Since Easter is the end of the Lent season, food plays a big part in the celebrations. Traditional Easter foods include lamb or goat, artichokes, and special Easter breads that vary from region to region.
It includes:
4 breakfasts,*
2 cooking lessons of approximately 4 hours;**
2 lunches from cooking classes;
4 nights accommodations in the apartments of the farm,
2 half day tours (with car and car driver).
* in your apartment you will find coffee, milk, biscuits, jams, butter and sugar.
It is not included: heating in the apartment is on consumption, the taxi to Perugia, the Easter lunch in Assisi.
The tours in a Volkswagen Minivan with eight seats and air conditioned.
EASTER COOKING and TOURS: Day by day itinerary
Thursday 5th April
Arrival at the country farm "La volpe e l'uva" (Central Italy, Umbria, near Tuscany) . Check-in your apartment at 4:00pm. Dinner reservations can be made at a restaurant of your choiceFriday 6th April
Hands-on cooking lesson starts around 10:00 am.You will prepare a four course lunch with recipes typical of the Easter eve. For lunch you will eat your creations accompanied by our wines. Easter is a very special time here in Umbria and the Processione del Cristo Morto on Good Friday night is a stupendous event in Gubbio. On Good Friday,weoffer you a special tour in Gubbio which concludes with the hauntingly beautiful Processione del Cristo Morto at night through the medieval backstreets. Saturday 7th April
In the morning you will visit Perugia with a professional guide. Perugia is only 4km far from the farm, very easy to reach by taxi.
Hands-on cooking class starts around 4,30 pm. You will prepare a four course dinner with typical Easter recipes, that you will eat at the end of the class, accompanied by our wines.
Sunday 8th April 2012- EASTER
You will spent your Easter day in Assisi, a beautiful medieval town based on Mount Subasio, overlooking a peaceful Umbrian landscape. Assisi is essentially known for the fact that it’s the place of birth of St. Francis in and that of Santa Chiara. You will visit the city and the famous churches like the St. Francis Church filled with spectacular frescoes by Giotto, and also the Eremo delle Carceri (a peacefully isolated church and monastery in the wooded slopes just outside Assisi's walls, this was the first monastic home of St. Francis' and his followers) and the St. Damiano church (A church and monastery outside the city walls is where the crucifix spoke to St. Francis, prompting him to repair it and begin his ministry. Later, St. Clare died here). Professional guide in the tour during the morning. You will have the Easter lunch in a restaurant of the city centre. Free afternoon in the city.

My daughter and I went on this trip wanting to get to know Italian culture and to do something spiritual to honor the Easter holiday. We could not have asked for anything more! Raffaella is a more and gracious hostess. The cooking classes, guided tours and the relaxing time spent overlooking the Umbrian landscape were the perfect balance. Wonderful food, wine and great people also staying at the house. We wouldn't have changed a thing!! Raffa even organized our drive back to the FCO airport.
